Gear Focus sits down with Armando Ferreira
Gear Focus' founder was pumped to sit down with Youtuber Armando Ferreira to discuss gear, creativity, drive, and a whole range of other aspects that go into creating and growing a successful Youtube channel. Armando has over 420k subscribers on his Youtube channel,
Mondo Bytes.
Building and growing a successful Youtube channel
Armando Ferreira has been creating Youtube content for over a decade, and in that time has grown his channel to over 420k subscribers. Armando started by doing tech review videos and has transitioned over the years into more of a filmmaking/gear review platform. In our creator interview, Armando goes into detail about his process and how he was forced to come up with creative solutions early on in his career. (Something we can probably all relate to!)
Canon 5D Mark II
During the course of the interview, we also discovered that Armando first began shooting his Youtube videos with a
Canon 5D Mark II. "It's an amazing camera - still an amazing camera," Armando says. And as we discuss, there are a TON of great cameras out today that are cheaper than their predecessors yet still offer great value. Cameras like the
Canon 1DX Mark II that can be found much cheaper now that the 1DX Mark III is out.
Armando Ferreira started with just one lens (a 35mm Sigma). Therefore he to get creative with camera placements to get the shots he needed just right. This was a recurring theme in our discussions with Armando. The perfectionist drive to get things exactly right, which also leads you to wanting to improve. The more you create, the better you get as you continue to raise the bar.
VidIQ and Tubebuddy
Another important feature when growing your Youtube channel is to keep marketing in mind. You always have to be thinking of how you'll get the message out to your potential subscribers. This comes down to familiarizing yourself with tools such as
VidIQ and
Tubebuddy.
Armando's Top Tips
What it all comes down to is making something FOR YOU that you would want to watch. Armando Ferreira believes that the gear doesn't matter. You can shoot on anything and continue to improve your techniques. It's also important to figure out your style and build on that as opposed to trying to outdo other Youtubers.
What Are Your Plans for Your Channel Moving Forward?
Moving forward Armando says they will be doing more gear reviews and comparisons that can be applied to real-world scenarios. Check out Armando's latest video: a comparison between the C500 Mark II vs. BMPCC6K. These videos will be styles as "small shorts - most people do camera comparisons, they'll film a flower or model. We want to put it in the real world how filmmakers will use it." Comparing cameras by creating high end short films is a great way to see how cameras function and what limitations as well as issues you may run into.
