Lens Overview — Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II IF
Key Features — Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II IF
Constant f/2.8 Aperture: The lens maintains a maximum aperture of f/2.8 throughout the entire 70–200mm zoom range, ensuring consistent exposure and depth-of-field control without adjustment as you zoom.
VR II Image Stabilization: Nikon's second-generation Vibration Reduction system offers a Normal mode with automatic panning detection and an Active mode that stabilizes in both dimensions, giving you flexibility across shooting situations.
Silent Wave Motor Autofocus: The built-in Silent Wave Motor drives autofocus at near-silent levels, making it well-suited for video work and situations where quiet operation matters.
Full-Time Manual Override: M/A mode allows you to override autofocus manually at any time without switching modes, so you can fine-tune focus instantly without interrupting your workflow.
Internal Focus & Zoom: Both focusing and zooming are handled internally, meaning the lens barrel length stays constant and the front element never rotates, which simplifies use with polarizing and graduated filters.
Weather-Sealed Construction: A rubber gasket around the Nikon F mount combined with environmental sealing throughout the barrel provides protection against dust and moisture in demanding shooting conditions.
Description — Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II IF
The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II is a professional telephoto zoom lens for the Nikon F mount, offering a focal length range of 70–200mm with a constant aperture of f/2.8 to f/22. Autofocus is driven by a Silent Wave Motor (SWM), delivering almost silent operation with support for M/A, A/M, and M modes and full-time manual override. The VR II image stabilization system provides two modes — Normal (with automatic panning detection) and Active (stabilizing in both dimensions) — selectable via a dedicated side switch.
The lens body is built primarily from magnesium alloy and is environmentally sealed with a rubber gasket at the Nikon F mount. Both focus and zoom are internal, so the lens maintains a constant physical length during use. The 77mm filter thread does not rotate during autofocus, and the front element stays stationary.
A detachable tripod foot with a rotating ring and anti-twist plate compatibility is included, as is the HB-48 petal-type hood. The focus ring spans 130 degrees of rotation with a smooth, well-damped action, and the distance scale marks 5 distances plus infinity in both feet and meters. This lens earned a DPReview Gold Award with a score of 85%.
