Have phones advanced so far that you can throw out your camera?! No, of course not. But they are improving at a rapid rate. Maybe someday all you will need is your phone in your pocket. But for now, we'd suggest keeping your camera around. Our friend Lee Zavitz takes a look at portrait shooting with Apple ProRAW compared to Sony RAW.
What is Apple ProRAW?
Apple's ProRAW format works similarly to
HDR photography. The camera automatically takes multiple images at multiple exposures and merges them. This of course results in substantially larger file sizes. Apple ProRAW is available on the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Turn on Apple ProRAW
To enable ProRAW photos on your iPhone 12 Pro or Pro Max, head to Settings > Camera > Formats. Then turn on Apple ProRAW under "Photo Capture." Take a ProRAW picture by tapping "RAW" when you open the Camera on your phone. The phone will do all the work for you to take the ProRAW photo.

Apple ProRAW vs. Sony RAW
So then the question: how does it compare to the competition? For that, we turn to Lee Zavitz.

Make sure you check out
Lee's channel and like/subscribe while you're there! Lee takes a look at the differences between shooting with Apple ProRAW and Sony RAW. It's pretty incredible what you can do with an iPhone and a couple tweaks in post. The iPhone images need a little more tweaking than the Sony images overall. But you can definitely make these adjustments pretty quickly to achieve similar results to Sony RAW. With that said, upon higher magnifications you will definitely be able to see some of the detail loss. The phone just can't quite pack as much detail as the Sony is able.
