Overview — Canon FD 28mm f/2.8
Key Features — Canon FD 28mm f/2.8
28mm f/2.8 Wide-Angle Prime: A 28mm focal length covers a natural wide-angle field of view well suited to landscape, street, and indoor shooting.
7-Element Optical Design: The 7-element, 7-group construction with near-complete spherical aberration correction delivers strong center sharpness wide open and edge-to-edge sharpness by f/4.
Super Spectra Multi-Coating: Canon's S.S.C. multi-coating keeps chromatic aberration well controlled, though flare and ghosting remain a weakness when shooting directly into sunlight.
170g Compact Build: At 170g and 40mm in length, this is the second lightest lens in the FDn range, making it easy to carry all day for travel or street photography.
Virtually Zero Distortion: Geometric distortion is negligible at normal subject distances, keeping straight lines straight — a practical advantage for architecture and interiors.
0.3m Minimum Focus Distance: A close focus distance of 0.3m (1ft) gives the lens more versatility for detail shots and environmental subjects than many wide-angle primes of its era.

Description — Canon FD 28mm f/2.8
The Canon FD 28mm f/2.8 — also known as the FDn 28mm F/2.8 — is a wide-angle prime built for the Canon FD/FDn mount with a 7-element, 7-group optical design. Canon's Super Spectra Coating (S.S.C.) multi-coating delivers good chromatic aberration control and nearly complete spherical aberration correction. Sharpness wide open is strong at the center with minimal edge softness, progressing to edge-to-edge excellence by f/4 and f/8.
Distortion is virtually nonexistent at normal subject distances, and vignetting — present wide open — resolves around f/4. The 5-blade aperture produces slightly polygonal bokeh at closed apertures, but renders circular at maximum aperture. At just 170g and 40mm in length, with a 63mm diameter, it is the second lightest lens in the FDn lineup.
The minimum focusing distance is 0.3m (1ft). The polycarbonate body and plastic filter thread keep weight minimal. Note that flare and ghosting performance is poor in direct sunlight.
Compatible with Fujifilm X Series and Sony a7 E-Mount via a glass-less adapter, this lens is well-suited for wide-angle, landscape, street, and indoor shooting.
Pros — Canon FD 28mm f/2.8
- ✓Edge-to-edge sharpness at f/4 and f/8 ranks among the best in the FDn range (specifications: sharpness_stopped_down)
- ✓Super Spectra Coating (S.S.C.) multi-coating provides good chromatic aberration control (specifications: coating, chromatic_aberration_control)
- ✓Extremely compact and lightweight at 170g and 40mm in length — second lightest in the FDn lineup (specifications: weight_g, length_mm, rank_among_fdn_by_weight)
Cons — Canon FD 28mm f/2.8
- ✗Ghosting and flare control rated poor — pronounced when shooting into sunlight (specifications: ghosting_and_flare_control)
- ✗5-blade aperture produces slightly polygonal bokeh except at maximum aperture (specifications: bokeh_shape, aperture_blades)
- ✗Vignetting is present wide open and only resolves around f/4 (specifications: vignetting)
