Optical Design

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM is a **full-frame** compatible **prime** lens designed for **Canon EF mount DSLR** cameras. Its standout specification is the **f/1.2 maximum aperture**, which places it among the fastest lenses available in the standard focal length range. The **50mm focal length** sits squarely in the standard range, delivering a field of view that tends to feel natural and unforced across a wide variety of subjects and environments. The lens offers both **autofocus and manual focus** capability, giving shooters control over how they acquire focus depending on their needs. A **72mm filter thread** provides compatibility with a broad selection of standard photographic filters. Weighing **545g**, the lens has a solid, well-built feel appropriate for its specification level. There is **no image stabilization** on board, so handheld shooting in challenging light will depend on the photographer's technique or any in-body stabilization their camera may offer. Overall, the optical and mechanical package here is built around that headline **f/1.2 aperture** and the flexibility of the **Canon EF mount** ecosystem.

One of the widest available apertures in a 50mm prime, enabling shooting in low ambient light and producing an extremely shallow depth of field.

f/1.2 Maximum Aperture

Part of Canon's professional L-Series lineup, constructed to the higher optical and build quality standards expected in demanding shooting environments.

Canon L-Series Build

Ultrasonic motor delivers fast, near-silent autofocus with full-time manual focus override without switching out of AF mode.

Ring-Type USM Autofocus

Standard focal length produces a natural, close-to-human-eye field of view well suited to portraits, street, documentary, and general-purpose photography.

50mm Full-Frame Prime

Compatible with the full range of Canon EF mount DSLR bodies, including full-frame models such as the 5D and 1D series.

Canon EF Mount

Covers the complete 35mm sensor area on full-frame bodies with no vignetting concerns on compatible Canon EF cameras.

Full-Frame Image Circle

Standard 72mm front thread accepts widely available circular polarizer, ND, and UV filters.

72mm Filter Thread

Substantial weight and build quality reflects the large-aperture optical design and professional-grade materials used throughout the lens.
