The Nikon L35AF, nicknamed 'Pikaichi' (meaning 'top notch' in Japanese), was Nikon's first autofocus compact 35mm film camera. Released in 1983, it quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality Sonnar-derivative lens, reliable autofocus, and robust build quality. This camera marked a significant milestone in Nikon's consumer camera development.

The Nikon L35AF is a **35mm film** compact camera built on an **all-metal chassis with a plastic outer cover**, weighing **320g** and measuring **125.5mm x 73mm x 48.5mm**. It supports film stocks rated from **ISO 50 to ISO 1000**, making it adaptable to a solid range of shooting conditions. Autofocus is handled by a **single-point** system, keeping the shooting experience simple and intuitive. For composing shots, the camera features a **direct optical, reverse-Galilean Albada-type bright-frame viewfinder** — a refined optical design that suits the camera's compact character well. The **built-in pop-up flash** carries a guide number of **10 (ISO 100, meters)** with an effective flash range of **0.7m to 2.5m**, providing practical coverage for indoor and close-range situations without needing an external unit. The L35AF has no weather sealing, no image stabilization, and no wireless connectivity, keeping it focused purely on the film shooting experience.

The L35AF holds a notable place in camera history as Nikon's first autofocus compact film camera, making it a sought-after collectible as well as a capable shooter.

Nikon's First AF Compact

The fixed Sonnar-type 35mm f/2.8 lens is well-regarded for its sharpness and rendering, covering a natural field of view suitable for street and everyday photography.

Sharp 35mm f/2.8 Lens

An infrared-assisted passive autofocus system locks focus quickly and reliably, making the camera accessible for shooters of all experience levels.

Infrared Passive Autofocus

Accepts a wide range of DX-coded film stocks, from slow daylight films to faster emulsions suited for low-light shooting.

ISO 50–1000 Film Range

A solid metal internal structure gives the body durability and a quality feel despite its compact, everyday-carry size.

All-Metal Chassis

The direct optical reverse-Galilean Albada-type viewfinder provides a clear, bright framing experience typical of quality compact cameras of its era.

Bright-Frame Viewfinder

The integrated flash with a guide number of 10 (ISO 100, meters) and a range of 0.7m–2.5m handles indoor and close-range shots without any accessory.

Built-In Pop-Up Flash

At 320g and 125.5mm x 73mm x 48.5mm, the L35AF is genuinely pocketable and light enough for all-day carry.

320g Compact Body

Runs on two widely available AA alkaline batteries, so finding a replacement on the go is never a problem.
